Severe Weather System Claudia's Impact: Recovery Operations Persist as Cold Snap Looms

Emergency crews are still working to manage extensive flooding triggered by the recent severe weather.

A major incident was declared in the town of Monmouth, south-east Wales, where individuals were rescued or evacuated from waterlogged properties after torrential rain on the weekend.

On Sunday, four severe flood warnings, warning of life-threatening conditions, remained active, alongside dozens of alerts across England. Water heights on the Monnow exceeded all-time highs, topping levels seen during previous severe weather events.

Residences, businesses, transportation systems, and power grids all experienced damage from major water inundation in Welsh regions, officials confirmed.

Reports indicated that around 20 homes and businesses in England were flooded due to the storm, including some in Cumbria.

As Storm Claudia moves away, a cold snap is forecast to move across the UK, bringing sub-zero conditions and possible snow and ice.

Saturday night, the country experienced its chilliest night since late March, with temperatures plunging to -7C in Tulloch Bridge, Scotland.

A temperature drop of approximately five degrees will change unseasonably warm autumn readings to single digits nationwide, with Sunday's high at about 11C in the southeastern region before becoming colder at the week's beginning.

"As Storm Claudia retreats, atmospheric pressure to the northwest will bring a cold northerly flow across the country," a weather expert stated. "This results in significantly chillier conditions than recently, and, though mostly dry, there is also a potential of wintry hazards. Frost across many areas are expected, with readings falling as low as minus seven in some places next week, and daily maximums staying in the single digits."

He added, "Combine this with a chilly northern breeze, and there will be a significant wind chill. This marks a significant shift after a prolonged spell of unseasonable warmth."

Health authorities have activated a cold weather alert for parts of the Midlands and northern England from Monday, while flood management bodies have warned that flood risks may continue throughout the coming days.

The cold weather alert is effective from 8am Monday until Friday morning, including the East Midlands, western Midlands, northeast, northwest, and Yorkshire and The Humber.
