Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Lineup Versus Team India
Labuschagne finds himself omitted from Australia's three-match ODI series facing India, as in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw getting a surprise inclusion.
Performance Issues Lead to Exclusion
Labuschagne has been omitted from the ODI team after scoring just one run in each of his two innings during the top-end series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a top score of 47 in his previous ten ODI innings.
Labuschagne has featured in 68 one-day internationals and amassed 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64, but will now focus on earning a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates
Recent performances suggest of a resurgence with a score of 160 for Queensland in the domestic first-class competition this week, while Renshaw scored a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his ODI debut in the forthcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also aiming for a red-ball recall as Australia look for a solution to their batting top-order problems.
Bowling Additions and Fitness Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after taking a break since starring for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen might get his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the build-up to Australia’s previous 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins remains on the sidelines as he aims to recover from a spinal issue by the time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the upcoming Ashes series, although Glenn Maxwell will be absent for the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.
“Selectors have announced a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be rotation through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an crucial phase in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India begins on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20s from October 29.
