Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson revealed he barely escaped a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track directly in front of him

The alarming incident occurred on the third rotation when safety workers were spotted on the track as Lawson was getting back on the race following an premature pit stop to change his damaged front wing

Competitor's Live Reaction

Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson communicated to his team engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was observing"

"I came out on a new set of hards, and then I got to Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals sprinting across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was so dangerous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a active circuit safety personnel can be allowed to just sprint across the track in that manner. I don't understand the reason, I'm confident we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"

Governing Body Reviewing

The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the events

"Subsequent to a first corner event, race control was notified that fragments were located on the track at the critical section of that bend" stated the FIA

"During the third lap, track officials were alerted and put on alert to access the circuit and remove the wreckage once the entire field had cleared the area"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch officials were withdrawn and a caution signal was shown in that section"

"Our inquiry continues what transpired after that point"
