Adolescent Found Dead Following False Allegations of Stealing Ashes
One 14-year-old boy was discovered deceased only a few days after being falsely accused of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a break-in, an inquest has learned.
Tragic Discovery
The young boy's mother and father found his body in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Accusations Begin
The investigation learned how his parent received a communication on November 8th, 2021 via online platforms, from a individual inquiring if Kai was her child. The communication stated: "Inform him thanks for burgling my flat."
In a testimony read to the proceedings, the mother said the individual had been in the media, asserting her baby's ashes had been taken in a break-in - a claim which was false.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An investigation report from police later determined the alleged burglary victim had "lied to police" and "evidence shows that the items was never stolen in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed stolen remains attracted social media responses, and although the teenager was not named in the messages, his parent said individuals "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she said.
Mental Health Effect
She explained that Kai had been identified with moderate ADHD, and as part of that condition, other individuals' opinions really were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
Kai was arrested at home, but no evidence was discovered. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later freed pending further inquiry.
Police said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had not reached out to the family by the time of his death.
Isolation and Anxiety
His parent said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could seem like much longer".
When she talked to him about the alleged incident, she said her child informed her he had entered the house because the woman who resided there had said he could use the bathroom whenever he wanted, but refuted removing anything.
Digital Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being bullied online after the accusations.
The proceedings heard that one young adult encouraged Kai to end his life.
She had no concerns on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and joking".
She described him as a "caring, loving" young man, and said her "family is totally devastated".
He had been "obviously hiding his concerns", she said, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "think bad of him".
School Response
The hearing heard from school staff at the local High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some boys discussing that the student had been detained and that was the first I learned".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she added.
After the discussion, the staff member said she rang Kai's family landline and provided a voicemail saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.
The court heard his family said they did not receive that message.
Formal Conclusion
Senior investigator informed the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before deciding whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Delivering a narrative conclusion, he stated: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsupported allegations were made against the teenager, a young child.
"Probably untruths were afterwards exaggerated and amplified through the medium of social media.
"During November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and after his interview he was freed whilst inquiries continued."
The official determined: "There is no evidence that the acts or omissions of any organization caused or contributed to his passing and although it was the outcome of a personal action it is impossible to determine his intent."
